Perineoplasty

What is Perineoplasty?

The perineum tissues between the rectum and the vagina often get disfigured due to childbirth, marred by tears and uneven scars. This can also lead to vaginal laxity or looseness. Perineoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that reverses the effects of age and childbirth, restoring the perineum tissues to their pre-pregnancy condition. During the procedure, the perineum is rebuilt, the skin tissues are resurfaced, and the underlying muscles are tightened. The procedure also narrows the vaginal walls to increase tightness. While the perineoplasty can be performed as an isolated procedure, it’s often grouped with a vaginoplasty.

You’re a Candidate for Perineoplasty if You…

  • Are experiencing vaginal looseness due to vaginal childbirth.
  • Are experiencing decreased sensations during sexual intercourse.
  • Are experiencing bowel troubles.
  • Want to reverse the effects of pregnancy and sudden weight fluctuations.

Dr. Bonni’s Perineoplasty Procedure

Dr. Bonni’s perineoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under mild sedation and local anesthesia. As such, you’re awake for the procedure, but you experience no pain or anxiety. The surgery concludes in 30 to 45 minutes. Dr. Bonni performs the procedure using a fractional CO2 pixel laser or an Ellman Surgitron, a device that uses radiofrequency energy to make incisions with the utmost precision and minimal side effects.

During the procedure, Dr. Bonni makes a v-shaped incision in the posterior vaginal wall using a fractional CO2 pixel laser or an Ellman Surgitron. Once the incisions are made, the scar tissues are removed, and the underlying muscles and skin tissues are repaired. The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. After an observation period of an hour, you can return home for recovery.

Perineoplasty is often performed in conjunction with a vaginoplasty, but it can also be performed as a stand-alone surgery.

Recovering from Your Perineoplasty

You can resume your daily work and activities a few days after the perineoplasty — the specific downtime depends on your body’s recovery rate. You might experience mild bleeding, swelling, discomfort, and pain. However, you can manage the pain and discomfort with prescription pain medications. You’re advised to wear a sanitary pad for a few days. The absorbable sutures usually dissolve within two weeks. You should also drink plenty of water and eat fibrous foods to prevent constipation. While you can resume most activities in a few days, you should avoid sexual intercourse and strenuous physical activities for at least six weeks.

Risks of Perineoplasty

Although perineoplasty is a safe procedure, it’s a surgery, and as such, carries a few risks inherent with surgeries, such as infections and bleeding. The fractional CO2 pixel laser and Ellman Surgitron devices minimize bleeding, ensuring a negligible risk of complications, but the risk is still present. As such, if you notice excessive bleeding, pain, pus formation, or other signs of infections, you must contact your surgeon immediately.
