Urinary Incontinence

What is Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence (UI), a condition that leads to the involuntary discharge of urine, affects approximately 20 million women in the United States. UI is a common condition that most women experience due to aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and other factors. However, self-consciousness and embarrassment prevent women from speaking about it or seeking treatment. On average, patients suffer through urinary incontinence for 10 years before seeking help — most continue using sanitary pads. Furthermore, most healthcare providers have limited knowledge of the latest advancements in the treatment for urinary incontinence.

Why Choose Dr. Bonni?

Dr. Aram Bonni specializes in the latest cutting-edge treatments for UI — he performs a thorough evaluation to determine the root cause of your urinary incontinence and recommend the appropriate treatments. If you experience the symptoms of urinary incontinence, your treatment options include:

  • Laparoscopic Burch Urethropexy
  • InterStim® Therapy
  • Mini-Sling Incontinence Treatment
  • Transvaginal ( TVT) Sling Treatment
  • Transobturator (TOT) Sling Treatment

Laparoscopic Burch Urethropexy

Laparoscopic Burch urethropexy is a minimally invasive procedure for stress urinary incontinence (SUI), i.e., when you experience a loss of bladder control due to sudden pressure on the urethra. Burch urethropexy, also known as urinary bladder suspension, involves elevating the urethra with sutures. The sutures are placed around the bladder neck and proximal urethra on both sides and attached to the pelvic ligaments. As such, the sutures suspend and support the proximal urethra, treating stress urinary incontinence. You can resume most of your daily activities and work after a short recovery period.

InterStim® Therapy

InterStim® therapy, also known as sacral nerve stimulation, is a procedure wherein a medical device is implanted to help you deal with an overactive bladder (OAB) by stimulating the sacral nerves, i.e., the nerves controlling the bladder function. During the procedure, the InterStim® implant is placed beneath the skin and just above the tailbone, where it can deliver mild electrical pulses to stimulate the sacral nerves and improve overall bladder function. The complete recovery after InterStim® therapy takes roughly six weeks, but most patients can resume their normal routine with a few restrictions soon after the surgery.

Mini-Sling Incontinence Treatment

The mini-sling incontinence treatment is one of the latest innovations in treating stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This procedure is less invasive than other sling procedures because it only involves one small incision, and there’s no need to pass a needle through the groin. As such, the mini-sling procedure has far less risk of bleeding and bowel perforation. During the mini-sling incontinence treatment, the surgeon makes a small incision to plant the mini-sling device under the urethra. Most patients can resume normal activities in a few days, strenuous physical activities in 2 to 4 weeks, and sexual intercourse in 6 weeks.

Transvaginal (TVT) & Transobturator (TOT) Sling Treatments

Transvaginal (TVT) and Transobturator (TOT) sling treatment is a procedure wherein a tension-free tape is implanted underneath the urethra for support, improving your bladder functions. The tape is usually made of a non-absorbable thin mesh that offers strong support to the urethra, especially once the body grows into the mesh. The specific details of the procedure vary for each individual, but it can include passing special needles through the sides of the urethra, grafts, tapes, and other techniques. TVT and TOT sling treatments are the gold-standards in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Most women recover from the procedure and resume normal activities in a few days, but it takes several weeks to resume sexual intercourse or strenuous workouts.
